This presentation will examine the evolving impacts of climate change and the rising frequency of extreme weather events, including the costs of physical damage and the effects of flooding on housing markets and mental health. We will also highlight resources and strategies for reducing risk at the home and community levels.

This is a quick overview of a course normally delivered over two days. It focuses on Indigenous-led approaches to cultural burning that draws on both traditional knowledge and western fire science through Two-Eyed Seeing. Participants will see how they can use the Creating a Cultural Burn Pathway Workbook in small groups and emphasizes co-learning, reflection, and practical planning. Participants will return to community with the ability to use the Workbook to implement a plan that meets their specific needs.

This innovative approach highlights how two communities can work together to enhance emergency preparedness, improve response coordination, and build mutual resilience. The presentation will explore the process of building trust, maintaining open communication, and fostering teamwork that made this partnership a success. Attendees will learn how this collaboration not only improved emergency response capabilities but also strengthened intercommunity relationships, creating a lasting model of cooperation and shared commitment to safety and well-being.
